Japan PM Pushes for Greater Saudi Energy Cooperation
Tokyo's Foreign Ministry confirmed the two leaders spoke by phone, during which Takaichi expressed appreciation for Saudi Arabia's uninterrupted crude deliveries through Yanbu Port and pressed for broader energy supply cooperation.
The Japanese premier also raised serious concerns over regional stability, emphasizing the need to preserve the fragile US-Iran ceasefire, rapidly ease hostilities, and guarantee safe transit through the Strait of Hormuz — a chokepoint critical to global oil flows.
"It is important for the US and Iran to continue talks to reach a final agreement," Takaichi said, lending Tokyo's backing to the diplomatic efforts of countries currently acting as mediators.
She further pledged that Japan would remain an active partner with Riyadh and the broader international community in pursuing a diplomatic resolution.
Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman offered measured reassurance in response, stating that "Saudi Arabia intends to respond positively to ensure stable energy supplies to markets, including Japan."
Global energy markets have been on edge since hostilities between the US, Israel, and Iran erupted on Feb. 28, severely disrupting shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. A ceasefire brokered by Pakistan is currently holding, with further negotiations aimed at a permanent settlement expected in the near term.
