China Places 20 Japanese Firms on Its Export Control List

(MENAFN) China moved aggressively against Japan's defense sector Tuesday, blacklisting 20 Japanese companies in a sweeping export control crackdown that signals deepening friction between Asia's two largest economies.

China's Ministry of Commerce announced the designations, placing the 20 Japanese entities on its export control list effective Feb. 24, citing concerns over Japan's accelerating military buildup and the need to protect China's national security interests while fulfilling non-proliferation obligations, media reported.

Among the firms named is Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., one of Japan's most prominent defense and shipbuilding contractors — a designation that underscores the strategic intent behind the measures.

Under the new restrictions, Chinese export operators are explicitly prohibited from supplying dual-use items to the listed entities. The ministry further extended the ban to foreign organizations and individuals, barring them from transferring or providing China-origin dual-use goods to the designated firms. All ongoing related export activities, the ministry stressed, must halt immediately.

The move comes against a backdrop of sharply deteriorating bilateral relations. Tensions flared last November when Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi declared that a Chinese military strike on Taiwan could legally constitute a "survival-threatening situation," potentially enabling Japan to invoke the right of collective self-defense — remarks that drew swift and forceful condemnation from Beijing.

Tuesday's blacklisting represents one of the most concrete retaliatory measures China has taken against Japan since that diplomatic flashpoint, and analysts are likely to view it as a warning shot directed at Tokyo's expanding defense posture.
