Japan Criticizes Israel Over Illegal Settlements in West Bank

(MENAFN) Japan on Wednesday strongly rebuked Israel for authorizing new housing projects in the occupied West Bank, emphasizing that such settlement activity “are in violation of international law and undermine” the feasibility of a two-state resolution.

According to a declaration from the Foreign Ministry, “The government of Japan is deeply concerned about the approval by Israel to construct 11 new settlements and legalize eight outposts in the West Bank.”

Israel’s security council sanctioned the creation of 19 additional Jewish settlements during the weekend, raising the cumulative number of authorized illegal settlements in recent years to 69, based on Israeli statistics.

Tokyo “reiterates its deep regret” regarding the continuation of settlement expansion by Tel Aviv, despite repeated appeals from the global community, including Japan, the statement noted.

Highlighting that Japan has imposed penalties on four settlers involved in violent acts, Tokyo “once again strongly urges” Israel to “redress the decision and fully freeze its settlement activities."

Expressing “serious” alarm over the increase in settler aggression against Palestinians, Tokyo denounced such actions and demanded Israel “take appropriate measures promptly to prevent settler violence.”

Japan “reiterates the urgency to refrain from actions that escalate tensions, including those in the West Bank, amidst ongoing international efforts to stabilize the situation surrounding the Gaza Strip,” the statement concluded.
